Regulator Movie
During your study of the American Revolution, states like Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Virginia, Maryland, and Connecticut will be mentioned again and again. So what about North Carolina? Where were North Carolinians while the seeds of revolution were being sown in the North?
The 2004 documentary movie made by WUNC provides insight into the personalities of the individuals on both the Regulator and Militia sides of the conflict.
The Battle of Alamance was a confrontation between the Regulators, a group of backcountry settlers, and the North Carolina militia, led by Governor William Tryon. The battle took place on May 16, 1771, and was the final battle of the Regulator Movement, a rebellion against the colonial government. The Regulators were primarily seeking currency act reforms and an end to local corruption.
The British victory at the Battle of Alamance led to the end of the Regulator War and the signing of loyalty oaths by Regulators and their sympathizers. The aftermath of the battle included trials of some Regulators, and the hanging of James Few without a conviction in a military court.
The Alamance Battleground is a site that visitors can visit during the day. The Visitor Center has a film and displays artifacts from the battlefield.
